你怕冷吗？我以前一直以为自己挺怕冷的。因为小时候，我妈总是给我穿得很厚。

Nǐ pà lěng ma? Wǒ yǐqián yìzhí yǐwéi zìjǐ tǐng pà lěng de. Yīnwèi xiǎoshíhòu, wǒ mā zǒng shì gěi wǒ chuān dé hěn hòu.

怕 (pà) – to be afraid of

冷 (lěng) – cold

以前 (yǐqián) – before

以为 (yǐwéi) – to think, to believe

觉得 (juéde) – to feel, to think

穿 (chuān) – to wear

Do you feel cold? I used to think I was quite afraid of the cold. Because when I was a child, my mom always dressed me very warmly.

南方的乡下一到冬天就会很冷，是那种寒气会渗入骨头的冷。所以，我妈总是盖十斤重的被子。

Nánfāng de xiāngxià yī dào dōngtiān jiù huì hěn lěng, shì nà zhǒng hánqì huì shèn rù gǔtóu de lěng. Suǒyǐ, wǒ mā zǒng shì gài shí jīn zhòng de bèizi.

乡下 (xiāngxià) – countryside

冬天 (dōngtiān) – winter

寒气 (hánqì) – cold air

In the southern countryside, once winter comes, it gets very cold, and it’s the kind of cold that seeps into your bones. So, my mom always covered me with a quilt weighing ten jin.

就算这样的话，被子还总是潮潮的。因为我妈很怕冷，所以她也觉得我很怕冷，所以我小时候睡觉都是穿着毛衣睡的。

Jiùsuàn zhèyàng dehuà, bèizi hái zǒng shì cháo cháo de. Yīnwèi wǒ mā hěn pà lěng, suǒyǐ tā yě juéde wǒ hěn pà lěng, suǒyǐ wǒ xiǎoshíhòu shuìjiào dōu shì chuānzhe máoyī shuì de.

Even so, the quilt was always damp. Because my mom was afraid of the cold, she thought I was afraid of the cold too, so when I was a child, I always slept in a sweater.

虽然穿这么厚的衣服睡觉，我可能还是会瑟瑟发抖吧。

当然，南方的冬天也不是一无是处，比如家家户户都会有一个火盆，就是把灶台里烧红的炭放到一个铁盆里，然后一家人围着火盆烤火。

Of course, the southern winter is not without its merits. For example, every household has a fire brazier, where they place red-hot charcoal from the stove into an iron pan, and the whole family gathers around it to warm themselves.

而且还可以在火盆里烤桔子。就是用火钳把桔子放到火盆里，用烧红的炭埋到下面。

Érqiě hái kěyǐ zài huǒ pén lǐ kǎo júzi. Jiùshì yòng huǒ qián bǎ júzi fàng dào huǒ pén lǐ, yòng shāo hóng de tàn mái dào xiàmiàn.

还 (hái) – also

桔子 (júzi) – tangerine

火钳 (huǒ qián) – fire tongs

烧红 (shāo hóng) – to burn red

埋 (mái) – to bury

Also, you can roast tangerines in the brazier. You use fire tongs to place the tangerines into the brazier, burying them under the red-hot charcoal.

等到你看到有一缕黑烟飘起来的时候，就说明桔子烤好了。

Děngdào nǐ kàn dào yǒu yī lǚ hēi yān piāo qǐlái de shíhòu, jiù shuōmíng júzi kǎo hǎo le.

等到 (děng dào) – until

一缕 (yī lǚ) – a wisp

黑烟 (hēi yān) – black smoke

飘 (piāo) – to float

说明 (shuō míng) – to indicate

When you see a wisp of black smoke rising, it means the tangerines are roasted.

这时赶紧用火钳把桔子夹出来，在地上抖掉上面的灰，就能看到桔子皮有些地方已经烤焦了。

Zhè shí gǎnjǐn yòng huǒ qián bǎ júzi jiā chūlái, zài dì shàng dǒ diào shàngmiàn de huī, jiù néng kàn dào júzi pí yǒu xiē dìfāng yǐjīng kǎo jiāo le.

赶紧 (gǎn jǐn) – quickly

夹 (jiā) – to pick up

抖 (dǒu) – to shake

灰 (huī) – ash

烤焦 (kǎo jiāo) – to burn

At this point, quickly use fire tongs to take the tangerines out, shake off the ash on the ground, and you’ll see some parts of the peel already scorched.

等上一会儿，就可以上手去剥桔子皮了。桔子皮一剥开，就会有一股热气冒出来，同时还有烤桔子的清香。

Děng shàng yīhuìr, jiù kěyǐ shàngshǒu qù bō júzi pí le. Júzi pí yī bō kāi, jiù huì yǒu yī gǔ rè qì mào chūlái, tóngshí hái yǒu kǎo júzi de qīng xiāng.

等 (děng) – to wait

上手 (shàng shǒu) – to begin (doing something)

剥 (bō) – to peel

热气 (rè qì) – hot air

冒 (mào) – to rise

清香 (qīng xiāng) – fragrance

Wait a moment, then you can start peeling the tangerine. Once you peel the skin, a wisp of hot air will rise, along with the fresh fragrance of the roasted tangerine.

这时，掰下一瓣桔子，塞进嘴里，一咬，温暖的桔子肉的香味就会在你的唇齿之间流淌。再把桔子肉咽下去之后，整个胃似乎都变暖了。

Zhè shí, bāi xià yī bàn júzi, sāi jìn zuǐ lǐ, yī yǎo, wēn nuǎn de júzi ròu de xiāng wèi jiù huì zài nǐ de chún chǐ zhī jiān liú tǎng. Zài bǎ júzi ròu yàn xiàqù zhīhòu, zhěnggè wèi shìhū dōu biàn nuǎn le.

掰 (bāi) – to break off

嘴里 (zuǐ lǐ) – in the mouth

一咬 (yī yǎo) – one bite

温暖 (wēn nuǎn) – warm

香味 (xiāng wèi) – fragrance

唇齿 (chún chǐ) – lips and teeth

流淌 (liú tǎng) – to flow

咽 (yàn) – to swallow

胃 (wèi) – stomach

At this moment, break off a segment of the tangerine, stuff it in your mouth, and bite. The warm fragrance of the tangerine will flow between your lips and teeth. After swallowing the tangerine flesh, your entire stomach seems to warm up.

我是一个生活在冬天十分寒冷的南方乡下的孩子，所以我一直以为我很怕冷。

Wǒ shì yīgè shēnghuó zài dōngtiān shífēn hánlěng de nánfāng xiāngxià de háizi, suǒyǐ wǒ yīzhí yǐwéi wǒ hěn pà lěng.

生活 (shēnghuó) – to live, life

I am a child who lived in the very cold southern countryside during winter, so I always thought I was afraid of the cold.

但是等到我跟着爸妈搬到县城里住之后，我就很少会感受到乡下的那种寒冷了，我也渐渐发现自己并没那么怕冷了。

Dànshì děngdào wǒ gēnzhe bàmā bān dào xiànchéng lǐ zhù zhīhòu, wǒ jiù hěn shǎo huì gǎnshòu dào xiāngxià de nà zhǒng hánlěng le, wǒ yě jiànjiàn fāxiàn zìjǐ bìng méi nàme pà lěng le.

But after I moved with my parents to live in the county town, I rarely felt the cold of the countryside anymore, and I gradually realized I wasn’t so afraid of the cold anymore.

特别是等到我长大了一些，我一个人睡一张床之后，我就再也不盖我妈盖的那种十斤重的被子了。而且我再也不在睡觉的时候穿毛衣了。

Tèbié shì děngdào wǒ zhǎng dà le yīxiē, wǒ yīgè rén shuì yī zhāng chuáng zhīhòu, wǒ jiù zài yě bù gài wǒ mā gài de nà zhǒng shí jīn zhòng de bèizi le. Érqiě wǒ zài yě bù zài shuìjiào de shíhòu chuān máoyī le.

特别 (tèbié) – especially

Especially when I grew up a bit, after I started sleeping in my own bed, I never covered myself with that heavy ten-jin quilt my mom used to cover me with. Also, I no longer wore a sweater when I went to sleep.

甚至等到我上高中之后，有一天大降温，我妈让我爸给我送了一件厚羽绒服到学校，我当时就生气了，觉得这很没面子：我哪里有那么怕冷？！我又不是小孩子！

Shènzhì děngdào wǒ shàng gāozhōng zhīhòu, yǒu yītiān dà jiàng wēn, wǒ mā ràng wǒ bà gěi wǒ sòng le yī jiàn hòu yǔróngfú dào xuéxiào, wǒ dāngshí jiù shēngqì le, juédé zhè hěn méi miànzi: Wǒ nǎlǐ yǒu nàme pà lěng?! Wǒ yòu bùshì xiǎo háizi!

甚至 (shènzhì) – even

Even when I started high school, one day there was a sudden temperature drop, and my mom had my dad send me a thick down jacket to school. I got angry at that moment, thinking it was embarrassing: How could I be so afraid of the cold?! I’m not a little kid anymore!

我毕竟是长大了，我也觉得自己根本不怕冷。

Wǒ bìjìng shì zhǎng dà le, wǒ yě juéde zìjǐ gēnběn bù pà lěng.

毕竟 (bìjìng) – after all

After all, I had grown up, and I also felt I wasn’t afraid of the cold at all.

可是，奇怪的是，等到我当了爸爸，我竟然开始担心起儿子是不是穿的太少，老是给他穿太多衣服。

Kěshì, qíguài de shì, děngdào wǒ dāng le bàba, wǒ jìngrán kāishǐ dānxīn qǐ érzi shì bùshì chuān de tài shǎo, lǎo shì gěi tā chuān tài duō yīfú.

奇怪 (qíguài) – strange

But strangely, when I became a father, I actually began to worry if my son was wearing too little and kept dressing him in too many clothes.

当然他再也感受不到我小时候经历过的南方的寒冷了，而且他再也没机会吃到火盆烤桔子了。

Dāngrán tā zài yě gǎnshòu bù dào wǒ xiǎoshíhòu jīnglì guò de nánfāng de hánlěng le, érqiě tā zài yě méi jīhuì chī dào huǒ pén kǎo júzi le.
